Despite growing attention from the media, it’s been difficult to pinpoint exactly who is funding the Sunrise Movement.

And they’re making the “Green New Deal” and its socialist takeover of America their signature issue. You may have seen the “Sunrise Movement” in the news for one of their various protests against members of Congress.

On November 13, 2018, More than 200 Sunrise Movement demonstrators staged a protest outside the office of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, to demand that Democrats make the battle against climate change a top priority beginning in January 2019.

Two of those were former Wesleyan University students Matthew Lichtash and Evan Weber, both in their twenties, and the latter of whom had participated in the anti-capitalist Occupy Wall Street movement of 2011.

But dig a little deeper, and it is clear that the group is hardly organic. They say the United States has become a “rogue nation” by promoting its energy industry. In additional to mostly non-financial support from organizations like the Sierra Club and 350.org, SM has received monetary grants from the Wallace Global Fund, the Rockefeller Family Fund, and the Winslow Foundation. The American Action Forum estimates that the “Green New Deal” could cost between $51 and almost $93 trillion. Between its 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities, the group was able to raise just shy of $1 million during 2018 — and members intend to raise $2.5 million in 2019.

At least some of the salaries for Sunrise Movement staffers, according to Inside Philanthropies, are not based on conventional compensation agreements, but on what members claim they need to support themselves. But this “Green New Deal” would end America as we know it. They call themselves an “army” that is at “war” fighting in the name of extreme environmentalism.

During their student days at Wesleyan, Lichtash and Weber developed a friendship with then-visiting professor Michael Dorsey, a Club Of Rome member and former Sierra Club board member whom President Barack Obama had appointed to the EPA’s National Advisory Board in 2010 and 2012. The Sierra Club is a major player on the left, and has helped fund Senate Majority PAC. The Global Wallace Fund has given nearly $7 million to population control groups since the 1990s. One noteworthy backer of that pledge was Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who subsequently proceeded to unseat a longtime incumbent Democrat from the U.S. House of Representatives in the November 2018 elections.

The first “Sunrise Semester” drew approximately 85 young volunteers who worked across five states during the 2018 election cycle.

Its efforts received widespread attention when Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — now a New York Democratic congresswoman — joined them in protest. Sunrise sees itself as more akin to the civil rights movement of the 1960s or the Occupy Wall Street protests in 2011 than it does to older environmental groups.
