The road rises 800 feet (240 m) in 0.6 miles (1.0 km) at a 25% average grade, with steeper grades in sections. So when we arrived on the Big Island of Hawaii for the last few days of our honeymoon, we were on a mission to find the most epic hike that the Big Island had to offer.
Please note that rental cars are prohibited from driving down to the valley floor and 4x4 vehicles are required. Tours last about 2 ½ hours and begin from the Waipi’o Valley Artworks store in nearby Honoka’a, with the company shuttling guests to the stable area in the valley and proceeding on horseback from there. It is truly beautiful with a large waterfall a short hike to the left and then the beach and ocean to the right. Not the most pleasant fellow for sure.
This is a paved public road but it is open only to 4 wheel drive vehicles. When I read about it, I knew I'd made a mistake. The trail is accessible to hikers, who need a Waimanu camping permit from the state unless they do the trek as a strenuous day hike. The Wailoa Stream cuts right through the middle of the valley floor. There is a lookout point between the parking area and Waipi’o Valley where you can get a stunning view over most of the valley and the high sea cliffs stretching out to the west. Be aware though that the ocean currents can be strong so do not go into the water too deep. Turning left takes you inland into Waipio Valley where residents live.
