the existance of an area of free land, its continuous recession, and the advance of American settlement westward explain american development, the people who moved out west to prospect for gold and silver, a mill in northern california where they found gold and started the gold rush, came to america to find the fabeled mountains of gold and then planned to leave and live like kings in china, they didnt find gold, but they did find discrimination and poverty, california, nevada, arizona, colorado, south dakota, when cowboys and mexican vasqueros transported cattle to the railroad junctions from the ranches(grasslands), the government promised 160 acres to anyone who would live on and work the land for at least 5 years, people who stayed out on the plains were called because they would try to farm the horrible earth and often had to make their houses from the sod they dug up, nomadic, rode on horses and hunted buffalo, b/c the pawnee indians were being driven out by the sioux and they asked the gov for help and the gov put them into designated areas but this didnt work b/c the indians were nomadic, marched into the black hills of SD and proclaimed that there was gold, soon there were a ton of white settlers coming into the sioux reservation, custer tried to quell to sioux uprising becuase of all the whites but instead the sioux won and custer was defeated, they were becoming more and more aggressive with both the whites and each other, an attempt at the rebirth of native american culture, issued by the federal government in an attempt to civilize indians and force assimilation, the north had paid for a lot of the souths war debt so the individuals did not reap any of the economic rewards, big cash crop but they flooded the market with it and caused its value to plummet and many of the farmers were unable to pay back debts and many tenant farmers were driven off the land and others remained tied to the land as they were constantly trying to pay debts (crop-lien system), in 1883 the court decided that congress could not bar anyone from discriminating, 1896 homer plessy(7/8 white 1/8 black) was arrested for sitting in a whites only railroad car he sued saying that his civil rights had been violated, enacted after the plessy v ferguson case allowed seperate but equal, this along with literacy tests, and poll taxes were used to disenfranchise blacks, unauthorized execution of a person by a mob, a self-educated former slave who advocated the education of blacks to make them more economically viable and indespensable to the economy, became more and more popular as the mechanization of farming was too expensive for the family farm and drove them out of business leaving no competition for the large scale cash croppers, national grange of the patrons of husbandry, organized by oliver h kelley in the spirit of turners frontier thesis, passed in many states to regulate the railroad and silo rates, ruled that a state had the right to regulate the practices of a business if that business served the public interest, the railroad companies were increasing their long haul rates to make up for the regulations on their short haul rates so the feds stepped in, regulate and investigate railroad companies that participated in interstate rail trafficking.
