December 28, 2015 11:44 am The female ensign wasps seek out cockroach egg cases, known as ootheca, where she will lay an egg in one of the cockroach eggs inside the egg case. How you want your letter signed:  I don’t. These “weird house flies” are ensign wasps and they help to manage cockroach populations. Ensign Wasps prey upon the eggs of Cockroaches. I saw one of these in my room and i decided not to screw with it, it flew into my light multiple times but got out multiple times, window shut door open, go to sleep and i wake up with a sting on my knee. If you are finding them dead, we suspect some pesticide is being used in your home to control unwanted insect populations. This is an Ensign Wasp, and we are going to unashamedly tag this posting as Unnecessary Carnage. The pesticides versus the cockroach infestation seems like a choice between the lesser of two evils, and there are probably differing opinions on which is worse. In rare cases, wasps may actually build their nests inside of a house, especially if there is an entry via a ripped window screen, a gap in doorframes or windowsills, or an opening to the attic. The female wasps lay their eggs in them and the wasp larvae eat the cockroach eggs. We live in South Florida.

These things are gross and I killed about 3 of them inside my room in just one week!!

Some wasps enter a house in the fall, hibernate undetected through the winter, and then drowsily emerge in the spring. If you are finding similar creatures in different sizes, you may be dealing with more than one species, but the insect in the attached image is a beneficial Ensign Wasp. It may not look like it, but it is an insect that can be helpful! This house had previously been infested with roaches, we saw evidence of that after removing vents to repaint some of the rooms after we bought the house. The Ensign Wasp continuing to manifest its appearance in your apartment is a good indication that the Cockroaches are still present, albeit unseen. The allergens produced by cockroaches are likely concentrated in their fecal matter and in fragments of their body parts. Sounds like a useful bug to keep around the house! I've been stung twice by these inside my house, just FYI.

They have wings although I’ve never seen them fly. Wasps usually become a problem inside a house when their nest is located outside nearby. They have followed where cockroaches have gone. Unfortunately, many people kill them, thinking they are harmful pests when the truth is just the opposite.
