revenge of the creature review

The Creature was the last of the classic Universal monsters I got into, which only happened in 2001 via the original DVD release of CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON (1954).

Like Creature from the Black Lagoon the characters are not particularly well-developed, the leads in fact are very underdeveloped, but they don't annoy either. But, this film does have its moments, and at the very least is an adequate sequel. They arrive and lower a man down in what looks like an armored diving suit. The script is probably the weakest link in the film as we are asked to believe that the creature knows where and when Nelson will be when he crashes a party at a bar and steals her away...literally! Most Hollywood comedies don't make me laugh, but For the life of me, I can't understand why this film has a rating of only 4.8 currently on IMDb.

Far from a true classic, it entertains in spite of itself. Watch for another future Italian western star, Brett Halsey, "[RETURN OF THE CREATURE] was made in a few days by guys who never made a movie before or Ferguson quickly meets Helen, and he likes her. This is a site dedicated to the propagation of strange and exciting cinema (and television) from all over the world as well as America's own grand tradition of exploitation cinema classics.

Can the Creature be stopped?

Back in the Upper Amazon River Valley, an expedition headed by Professor Clete Ferguson (John Agar) attempts to locate the missing link first introduced in the previous year's "Creature From the Black Lagoon". When the monster goes on his rampage, a woman blithely lets go of her daughter who then falls at the feet of the creature. Later, she takes a shower in a motel, with the escaped creature outside, in a chilling pre-"Psycho" sequence.

But he hasn’t gone back to the Amazon.

Nelson befriends a dog that roams into the aqua park and then has it living in her hotel room? We shift to the Rita the same boat from the previous movie.

REVENGE is a streamlined retread that transplants the main setting to a Florida … The dialogue wasn't a strong point in the original, but it still wasn't anyway near as corny and awkward as the dialogue here. They start performing various scientific tests on the Gill man.

(Fortunately, the baggy shorts the men wore in the first movie have been replaced by dinky, tight speedo-like ones here.) The acting is up to its abyssal par and Lori Nelson is attractive but the thing takes place in Marineland, Florida.

She improves as it goes along, but is given some goofy things to say and do.

Welcome to Coolasscinema.com! I loved the film immediately, however, and was very much interested in watching its two sequels - REVENGE OF THE CREATURE and THE CREATURE WALKS AMONG US (1956). Also the shower motel sequence with it watching, not quite as scary as it lurking beneath the sea watching Julie Adams swimming on her own in the original, but it's the closest it gets to anything as effective as that. The police put out an APB on the creature. Bromfield, not long after having frolicked with Esther Williams in "Easy to Love", has a more difficult swimming partner this time as he continuously wrangles the Gill Man. He nearly escapes right away, but they net him and chain him to the pool. The harmless dialog sometimes sound aimed at a demographic exemplified more by the Gill Man than by his human captors.

And where did these guys buy the chain to hold the creature cause it doesn't hold up well. Clete and Helen get into the pool to feed and train the Gill-Man, and he gets pretty excited. Then she does the same thing with a ball.

In this film, more than in the original, audience sympathy leans towards the creature. John Agar is a good actor, but isn't quite the macho man that Richard Carlson was; and John Bromfield. They’ll be returning to the Black Lagoon in the morning. I Actually Liked This Better Than The First, Underpowered sequel has a few good moments. As in the original, there's an underwater swimming sequence, this time with Agar and Nelson canoodling while the creature lurks. The creature shows the scientists there, the male lead is John Agar with his hokey yet enjoyable acting style and the female is Lori Nelson who can at the very least fill out a swimsuit very nicely, that he can think and is very closely related to man.
It turns out he’s closer to human than fish, just a hair away genetically.

He goes for the air hose, but the men on the boat start shooting, and he swims away unharmed.

Ole Fish Face even moves a lot faster.

Freaks! This wasn’t as good as the first one, and it looked a bit cheaper as well.

Nelson places a box of food near him and as he reaches for it, Agar stabs him with a bull prod! Two fellows and the wonderful Nestor Paivia are back on the Rita in search of the missing link creature. Clete grabs Helen, and the cops start shooting. Wires were once again used to pull the Creature out of the large tank at Marineland as the Creature attacked actor, John Bromfeld. John Ager also gives a very wooden lead performance.
A tiny radius of chain in the middle of a not-very-large pool. If you liked the first one, you won’t hate this, but it’s a noticeable step down in quality. A group of scientist go back to the Black Lagoon to capture the Creature. John Agar is the scientist and he is as wooden as ever.

Great, eerie night-time photography at the end and thrilling scenes make this a winning sequel.

The creature attacks immediately. 5.5/10 Bethany Cox.

Clint Eastwood has a brief and silly cameo in the beginning of the film. No argument here. The Creature from the Black Lagoon is back! The love story and escape work for me. This review is representative of the Universal Legacy Collection DVD set.
