We really enjoyed the views once we got past the brush, tree line and into the meadow.

We did this hike in December and it is not a great hike to do in the winter. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is best used from July until October.

The Echo Mountain fire burned 29 of the 31 homes in the Salmon River Mobile Village on the north side of Oregon Highway 18. The road to the TH leads to a small parking area and then into the brush. Definitely wear pants no matter what time of year to protect your legs and hiking BOOTS. But unlike the other major fires burning in Oregon, the Lincoln County blazes did not kill anyone. However we were unable to hike it because as soon as we turned off the highway the road was blocked by down trees.

I would recommend being able to identify/avoid devil's club and maybe long sleeves/pants. Beautiful hike but the trail was a little rough. – Officials with the Echo Mountain Complex have completed preliminary structural damage assessments in the fire area. It eventually levels off to a marshy loop.
I took the advice of other reviews and wore pants. This trail is pretty rough still in 2017 the sign shown here is no longer there just so you don't get confused this trail is listed as echo basin in the sweet home ranger district trail guide. 8 year old and 13 year old were did great. Although the trail needs love-uneven boardwalks, holes, overgrowth, etc., it is a gorgeous area. Located just 36 miles from downtown Denver, Echo mountain offers an experience that is close, affordable, and kick-butt! It then jumped Oregon Highway 18 and skipped up the steep hill into the Highland Heights residential area, which is filled with bigger homes and lots of trees and thick underbrush. Someone has cut down the brush on about 3/4 of this trail.
The forest road leading up to the trail head also had a lot of erosion and was a bit hairy and a few small places.

Bring water resistant shoes if you don’t like getting your feet soaking wet, and long durable pants for the thorny overgrowth. Information is updated every hour. To mourn their loss alone, or marvel that the rampaging fire somehow spared their property.
Centers to distribute donated goods have been set up in Lincoln City and Rose Lodge. There is a lot of overgrowth on this trail- waist deep for about half the trail. And, the county is working with state and federal officials to set up a one-stop center to help Otis residents apply for aid and navigate the process to salvage, clean up and potentially rebuild. Park here before the road narrows and gets grassy. absolutely beautiful, halfway through the loop it does get pretty muddy for a bit but the views were worth all of it and my 4 year old did amazing! That — and power outages — spurred the evacuation of the north part of town, including a hospital, nursing home, businesses and motels, and hundreds of homes. If you are sure footed and a slip wouldn’t be disastrous, it is worth doing.
Fire officials don’t yet know, or won’t yet say, what caused it. But there was some pretty areas of short grass and scattered wetlands from multiple little (maybe a foot or two wide at most) streams trickling down the mountain thru the meadow.
