Saint George by Donatelloby Jennifer Mei (CC BY). In May 1434, he signed a contract for the marble pulpit on the facade of Prato cathedral, the last project executed in collaboration with Michelozzo. His relief panels were praised for their use of perspective even if they were carved with a shallow depth, a technique known as ‘flattened relief’ or rilievo schiacciato. The Italian sculptor Donatello was the greatest Florentine sculptor before Michelangelo (1475–1564), and was certainly the most influential individual artist of the fifteenth century in Italy. Donatello was the first artist to craft a nude sculpture and many followed his example after his death, including Michelangelo. From 1438 is the wooden statue of St. John the Baptist for Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in Venice.
The statue can still be seen today in the Piazza del Santo.During his time in Padua, Donatello also completed the high altar of St. Antonio: four oversized reliefs narrating the life of St. Antonio, several smaller reliefs, and seven bronze life-sized sculptures (including the Madonna and Child and the Crucifixion). Next came four marble statues of prophets for the city’s campanile and then a gilt-bronze figure of Saint Louis of Toulouse for the refectory of the San Croce church in Florence (1422-25 CE). Patrons scrambled to own one of his works and gave him commission after commission until he died at the age of 80. It was commissioned by Cosimo de' Medici for the courtyard of his Palazzo Medici, but its date remains the subject of debate.
The young artist is known to have studied surviving examples of ancient Greek and Roman sculpture, both full figures and relief panels such as those commonly carved on Roman sarcophagi. In effect, Donatello made his figures and scenes come to life, an innovation that helped catapult the art world into the High Renaissance. The bronze statue is 3.4 metres (11 ft.) tall and is the first known example of its type to be produced since antiquity. Donatello was influential in popularising the classicizing style where Renaissance artists looked to the surviving works of antiquity for inspiration. Another prestigious project was the group of bronze statuettes for the facade of the cathedral in Sienna.
Donatello spent the remainder of his career working in either Florence or Sienna. Donatello also restored antique sculptures for the Palazzo Medici.[6]. Last modified August 26, 2020.

Schiacciato caused a major stir in the art world and Donatello found himself much in demand. Not a great deal of his youth is known except that he was involved in a fight with a German and hit him on the head with a club.
